🎙️New investigative podcast on doctors who kill instead of cure

Launching today: A brand-new true crime podcast, An Appointment with Murder, delves into the minds, methods, and motivations of medical murderers.

Hosts Dr Andrew Johns and Dr Harry Brünjes met when they were both medical students at Guy’s Hospital. Harry then spent sixteen years as a clinician and police surgeon, whilst Andrew became one of the leading forensic psychiatrists in the UK, spending years inside the walls of Broadmoor and giving evidence in at least 100 murder trials.

Together, they explore what happens when medicine meets malice and how this combination makes for a rare, but distinct category of killer.

The series opens with the infamous British medical murderer, Dr John Bodkin Adams, the lonesome doctor who charmed the British elite, only to rob them of life and legacy. From a troubled childhood to a cellar filled with stolen treasure, his case remains one of Britain’s most chilling.

They will also explore the notorious case of Harold Shipman and how this once modest GP became the most prolific serial killer in UK history. The episode hears from previous colleagues of Shipman's and provides a deep forensic dive into his psyche, drug addiction, and the system that failed to catch him sooner.

An Appointment with Murder will look at poisoners and predators from Victorian times to today, investigating the common thread that runs between these killers hiding behind medical titles.

Having both spent their careers delving into criminal minds, Dr Brunjes & Dr Johns will bring their first-hand experiences to examine these shocking stories, and explore the real dangers that emerge when medicine is abused.

Episodes of An Appointment with Murder will be released weekly on Apple and Spotify from 28th May. Members of The Crime Desk can binge all episodes as soon as it launches. Plus, they'll get exclusive weekly bonus episodes of award-winning podcast The Trial, ad-free listening across all Crime Desk shows, and early access to brand-new forthcoming series.
