🎙️Historian Sandbrook Launches Literary Podcast Exploring Classic Literature

Weekly show dissects world’s greatest books through historical and cultural lens

Goalhanger announced the launch of “The Book Club,” a weekly podcast hosted by historian Dominic Sandbrook and producer Tabitha Syrett that examines classic and contemporary literature through historical context. The show premieres February 17 on all major podcast platforms and YouTube.

Each Tuesday episode focuses on a single book, analyzing the author’s background, thematic elements and cultural impact. The hosts conclude episodes with definitive rankings designed to encourage audience engagement with literary works.

Host Background and Format:

Sandbrook, a Royal Historical Society fellow and bestselling author, co-hosts the global history podcast “The Rest Is History,” which attracts millions of listeners. Syrett has produced that show since 2023 and began co-hosting special fiction-focused episodes in 2025.

“I’ve loved books for as long as I can remember, and Tabitha and I have spent many happy hours debating our favourites while working on The Rest Is History,” Sandbrook said in the announcement.

Syrett emphasized accessibility over traditional literary criticism. “I wanted The Book Club to move beyond traditional literary criticism, making books feel accessible, engaging, and rooted in the historical worlds that shaped them and their authors,” she said.

Episode Programming:

The debut episode examines Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel “Wuthering Heights,” discussing Victorian-era controversy surrounding depictions of domestic abuse and class dynamics. The episode coincides with Emerald Fennell’s film adaptation released Valentine’s Day weekend.

Upcoming episodes feature works including “Never Let Me Go,” “The Great Gatsby,” “The Secret History,” “Frankenstein,” “1984” and “Northern Lights.”

Company Performance:

The podcast expands Goalhanger’s portfolio, which includes “The Rest Is Entertainment” and “Sherlock & Co.” The media company recorded more than 750 million full-episode streams in 2025, according to company figures. Apple Podcasts named “The Rest Is History” Global Show of the Year in 2025.
