NHPR has released Operation Night Cat, a three-part investigative true crime series that traces illegal poaching practices, only to stumble upon much bigger abuses of power.
This series initially debuted on the OUTSIDE/IN feed, but has been released in full on its own dedicated feed today, November 20th, 2025. Operation Night Cat’s description: A New Hampshire Fish and Game warden follows a tip to someone’s backyard. He finds a twisted game of one-upmanship, digital trophy rooms, and one of the biggest poaching cases in recent state history.
Then, the hunting investigation takes a surprising turn when it reveals another set of potential crimes – this time, behind the brick walls of New Hampshire’s State Prison for Men. Host Nate Hegyi has spent the past year digging into what happened next. Across three episodes, Operation Night Cat unmasks the identities of these poachers. What they find is a familiar tale in a new setting, adding a new angle to our national narrative around violence, abuse, and empathy.
Operation Night Cat is a collaboration with NHPR’s investigative team, Document, known for their award-winning work on The Youth Development Center podcast, which covered sexual abuse scandals at New Hampshire’s juvenile jails, and The 13th Step, whose groundbreaking reporting was a finalist for The Pulitzer Prize in audio
