‘Vanished: What Happened to Vanessa’ Hosted by John Quiñones Will Premiere Sept. 16
Today, ABC Audio and “20/20” announced that the new podcast “Vanished: What Happened to Vanessa,” hosted by ABC News correspondent John Quiñones, will premiere on Sept. 16. The limited series focuses on the 2020 murder of U.S. Army soldier Vanessa Guillén. ABC Audio also announced “20/20: The After Show,” hosted by “20/20” co-anchor Deborah Roberts, will expand into video starting Monday, Sept. 29, following the 48th season premiere of “20/20” on Sept. 26. Both shows are a part of ABC Audio’s true crime portfolio, which features several titles that have topped the charts and made best-of lists for Spotify and Apple.
In “Vanished: What Happened to Vanessa,” Quiñones takes listeners back to the murder of Private First Class Guillén at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas. After Guillén goes missing, her family pressures the military for answers. The search for their beloved sister and daughter ignites a movement and sparks a reckoning in the military. The series will feature exclusive, never-before-heard interview audio from ABC News and “20/20”’s original reporting, as well as new updates from the family. The trailer is available now on all podcast platforms.
“20/20: The After Show” gives listeners the story behind each week’s episode of “20/20.” Roberts shares the insights into the original reporting, strange-but-true twists, and exclusive interviews with those directly involved in each case, not heard in the episode. Catch up on last season ahead of the premiere video episode on Sept. 29; audio episodes will still be available on all major podcast platforms, and video episodes will be available on YouTube.
ABC Audio will be adding a bonus episode to each new limited series, beginning with “Vanished: What Happened to Vanessa,” led by “Start Here” host Brad Mielke. The additional episodes will feature Mielke in conversation with the series host, answering listener questions.
Since becoming a true crime audio destination, ABC Audio series have dominated the podcast charts with listenership growing exponentially across platforms. July 2025 was the best-performing month for true crime podcast titles on record for the brand. The recent launch of “Devil in the Desert” became the most successful ABC Audio limited series ever, maintaining the No. 1 spot on Apple Podcasts’ Top Shows chart for over three consecutive weeks. Previous launches “Bad Rap: The Case Against Diddy” and “What Happened to Holly Bobo?” also charted in the Top 5 on Apple Podcasts’ Top Shows, Top Series and Top True Crime lists, with the latter skyrocketing to No. 1. Spotify featured all three titles in its Best True Crime Podcasts (So Far) list, and Apple featured “Bad Rap” on its Best So Far 2025 list.
