An award-winning podcast for educators is reimagining Valentine’s Day with a 10-part series focused on relationship fundamentals rather than traditional romance gestures.
Teaching Through Emotions will launch its “Valentine’s Day Advent Calendar” on Feb. 2, publishing daily posts through Feb. 13 that teach practical skills for maintaining healthy relationships. The initiative challenges what creator Betsy Burris calls the holiday’s commercial focus on “chocolates and flowers” by emphasizing the work required for genuine connection.
“We want to celebrate the coming of the day by committing to being in healthy relationships,” said Burris, a teacher educator and psychotherapist who hosts the Women Who Podcast award-winning show. “Each post will give readers food for thought as well as a specific skill to practice. If you practice these skills with your partner, your Valentine’s Day will be truly meaningful, the way it should be.”
The series builds on the podcast’s core mission of helping educators navigate classroom emotional complexities. Burris argues the same skills that create safe learning environments—patience, conflict resolution and clear boundaries—apply directly to personal relationships. One highlighted concept, “Staying in Your Garden,” addresses boundaries and personal responsibility.
The first three posts will be available free to all subscribers on Feb. 2, while the remaining seven require paid subscriptions. The podcast positions a one-month upgrade, costing approximately the price of a beer, as an alternative Valentine’s gift focused on relationship investment rather than material purchases.
