today's brief

The Signal Awards announced finalists for their fourth annual honors Tuesday, revealing nearly 30% growth in submissions as the podcast industry continues expanding across entertainment, politics and culture. This year’s finalists include major media figures like Michelle Obama, Jon Stewart and Travis Kelce alongside independent creators, with ten new categories added to recognize emerging voices and niche formats. Jemma Rose Brown, Signal Awards General Manager, said the finalists showcase “not just great entertainment, but also education, activism, innovation, and joy.” Listener voting opens until October 9, with winners announced October 15.

Tennis legends Serena and Venus Williams partnered with the fwd network as exclusive advertising sales partner for their new podcast “Stockton Street,” marking a significant entry by major athletes into podcast monetization. The biweekly show features discussions on resilience, wellness and pop culture as the sisters share their journey from Compton to global stardom. New research from Radiocentre reveals audio advertising delivers superior returns, with digital audio generating £5.20 profit for every £1 spent long-term, compared to the £4.11 all-media average. The findings support industry advocacy for 20% media budget allocation to audio platforms.

The podcasting community mourns Todd Cochrane, founder and CEO of Blubrry Podcasting, who died September 8 at age 61 while traveling with family. The Podcast Hall of Fame inductee launched RawVoice in 2005 and Blubrry in 2006, building one of the largest independent podcast companies serving over 150,000 creators worldwide. Blubrry will mark its 20th anniversary September 27 as tribute to Cochrane’s legacy, with the company stating his vision of making podcasting “accessible, sustainable, and rewarding for creators” will continue guiding operations.

Anthony Scaramucci’s weekly interview series “Open Book” joins the Goalhanger network, expanding the political podcasting landscape alongside his successful “The Rest Is Politics: US” show with journalist Katty Kay. That program has become the world’s fastest-growing political podcast, averaging over 8 million monthly downloads and featuring sold-out live audiences across New York, Washington and London. “Open Book” explores how past ideas shape current events through conversations with business, political and cultural leaders, with the first Goalhanger episode featuring World War Two historian James Holland releasing Wednesday.
