The entertainment industry faced a significant free speech controversy this week as SAG-AFTRA issued a strong condemnation of ABC's decision to suspend "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" The guild, representing 160,000 entertainment professionals, called the move "the type of suppression and retaliation that endangers everyone's freedoms." The suspension came after intense outside pressure, including Nexstar Media Group pulling the show from stations and FCC Chairman Brendan Carr threatening license revocations for affiliates continuing to air the program. This unprecedented government pressure on broadcasters has raised serious First Amendment concerns across the industry.
Meanwhile, the podcasting world celebrated several major achievements and announcements. PodcastOne's "The Adam Carolla Show" reached its remarkable 4000th episode milestone, potentially making Carolla one of the only podcasters globally to achieve this count since launching in 2009. The achievement underscores the comedian's reputation as "the hardest working host in podcasting," maintaining Top 20 rankings for over a decade while pioneering live podcast recordings and earning a spot in both the Podcast Hall of Fame and the upcoming Hollywood Walk of Fame Class of 2025.
The industry also saw significant platform partnerships and content launches. Premiere Networks announced bringing veteran broadcaster Phil Hendrie's unique character-driven show to iHeartPodcasts, while Audacy launched "Simpsons Declassified with Nancy Cartwright," promising behind-the-scenes stories from America's longest-running scripted series. Additionally, the UK's Radio Academy announced its rebranding to "The Audio Academy," reflecting the industry's evolution beyond traditional radio as less than 40% of survey respondents now work solely in radio.
International collaboration took center stage with the "Be Hope" podcast takeover, featuring major shows like "The Rest Is Politics" and "Pod Save the World" coordinating content around the UN General Assembly to address global challenges. The initiative demonstrates podcasting's growing influence in serious political discourse. On the business side, Libsyn secured an exclusive multi-year advertising partnership with comedian Daniel Tosh's popular show, highlighting the continued monetization opportunities for established entertainers transitioning to podcast platforms.
