Podcasting Pioneer Todd Cochrane Dies at 61
Blubrry CEO and industry founder passes away unexpectedly while traveling
Todd Cochrane, founder and CEO of Blubrry Podcasting and a pioneering figure in the podcasting industry, died unexpectedly Sept. 8 while traveling on the West Coast. He was 61.
Cochrane passed away suddenly in the morning after spending time with family, according to a company statement released Monday.
Since founding RawVoice and Blubrry in 2005, Cochrane built one of the podcasting industry's most influential platforms, helping shape the medium from its early days into today's global phenomenon. He launched one of the first podcasts, Geek News Central, and was among the earliest to secure advertising deals in podcasting.
"Todd was more than a visionary in podcasting — he was a pioneer, a tireless advocate, and above all, a friend," said Barry Kantz, Blubrry's board chairman and CFO. "He literally wrote the book on podcasting at a time when few even knew what it was."
Cochrane dedicated nearly two decades to empowering independent creators with tools and opportunities for growth. His company became a cornerstone of the podcasting ecosystem, providing hosting, analytics and monetization services to thousands of podcasters worldwide.
"Blubrry wasn't just my dad's work — it was his dream," said his son Ray. "The Blubrry team made that dream possible, and he was grateful every day for the people who shared in his passion and helped him build something meaningful."
The company announced it will continue operating under Cochrane's vision, with the existing leadership team maintaining his mission to support podcasters.
"Todd gave us the talent, the direction, and the heart to continue forward," the Blubrry team said in a statement. "Together, we will carry on his mission and ensure that Blubrry remains a home for podcasters everywhere.”
Cochrane's influence extended beyond business success. Industry colleagues remembered him as an advocate who championed independent creators and helped establish podcasting's commercial viability during its formative years.
The company said details about memorial services and ways to honor Cochrane's memory will be announced in coming days. Blubrry asked the podcasting community to remember Cochrane as "a visionary leader, a devoted father, and a true friend to so many."
His death represents a significant loss for an industry he helped create, coming as podcasting continues experiencing unprecedented growth and mainstream adoption.
A Personal Tribute to Todd Cochrane
Todd Cochrane's death was a huge loss for the podcasting world. Todd was one of the first podcasters, and he was always available to give me his expert opinion for interviews on my podcast and in my newsletter.
Todd never hesitated to share his thoughts, whether they were about new trends in the industry or technical problems that creators were having. He was an invaluable resource during important times in our industry's growth because he was willing to talk to other podcasters.
Todd has done a lot more for podcasting than just what Blubrry has done. He helped build the foundation for the thriving podcast ecosystem we have today, and along the way, he mentored many creators.
The podcast business will really miss him. His knowledge, availability, and real desire to help creators shaped not only his company but also the whole medium we all love.
Thank you, Todd, for all the great things you've done for our field. Every new podcast and every creator who finds their voice is a part of your legacy.
Rest in peace. - Miko Santos, Podwires Publisher
