today's brief

New research reveals nearly half of podcast consumers would reject their favorite shows if artificial intelligence voices replaced human hosts, even as the industry experiences robust advertising growth and platform expansion. The findings from Sounds Profitable’s Podcast Landscape 2025 survey indicate 47% of listeners would be less likely to continue with podcasts featuring AI-generated voices in content or advertising, with resistance strongest among those holding postgraduate degrees at 49%. Researcher Tom Webster attributes this pattern to informed concerns about AI’s threat to white-collar employment rather than technological unfamiliarity, suggesting the educated workforce recognizes existential implications for human creators and performers.

Despite AI concerns, podcast advertising demonstrated strong momentum in August with Amazon leading spending at $6.8 million, followed by Teledec Health at $6.1 million, according to Magellan AI data. Direct-to-consumer brands including Washable Sofas increased investments to nearly $6 million, while major advertisers like Toyota, T-Mobile and State Farm collectively contributed over $13 million to the medium. The top 15 podcast advertisers spent $54.2 million during August, with supermarket chain Albertsons showing the largest spending increase from $289,000 in July to $1.5 million, and insurance companies Geico and Liberty Mutual making notable market entries.

Platform expansion continues reshaping podcast distribution as New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce launched on Prime Video Tuesday, joining the streaming service’s growing audio content lineup. The Super Bowl champions’ show, which set a Guinness World Record with 1.3 million concurrent YouTube viewers during a Taylor Swift interview, now provides audiences additional viewing options beyond traditional podcast platforms. Separately, podcast studio QCODE announced the launch of Daylight Media to provide creator services including advertising sales and distribution, securing new growth funding from Eldridge Industries while maintaining its studio operations for scripted and unscripted productions.

International research from the UK’s Radiocentre demonstrates audio advertising’s financial effectiveness, with digital audio returning £5.20 profit for every £1 spent over two years and broadcast radio delivering £5 returns, both exceeding the all-media average of £4.11. The analysis of 141 brands with £1.8 billion in media spending showed brands allocating 15% of budgets to audio experienced 5% increases in overall campaign ROI. Meanwhile, the podcast landscape sees significant transitions with Catherine Carr’s Where Are You Going? concluding after 200 episodes and over one million downloads, while Global prepares to launch Coining It, a six-episode series about a Bitcoin glitch exploitation, on September 30.
