today's brief

  • iHeartPodcasts debuted “Cardiac Cowboys,” a six-episode documentary series narrated by Chris Pine on World Heart Day, chronicling American surgeons who pioneered open-heart surgery in the mid-20th century. The series, produced by OSO Studios in partnership with executive producer John Mankiewicz, features medical pioneers who worked with makeshift equipment including repurposed dairy pumps and beer tubes to develop lifesaving techniques still used today. The complete series is available on the iHeartRadio app and major podcast platforms, sponsored by AI platform Jasper.

  • New Pew Research Center data reveals one-third of U.S. adults now get news from podcasts at least sometimes, up from 22% in 2020, with nearly 40% of adults under 50 consuming podcast news. The August survey found 54% of Americans listened to podcasts in the past year, up from 49% in 2022. Trust levels remain mixed, with 53% of podcast news consumers trusting the medium about the same as other sources, while political divisions show 31% of Republicans trust podcast news more than other sources compared to 15% of Democrats.

  • BBC Sounds launched “In Detail: Sanctuary, An Act of Defiance,” a six-part series examining the 1986 case of Sri Lankan activist Viraj Mendis, who spent two years inside Manchester’s Ascension Church to avoid deportation. The series, presented by Father Azariah France-Williams and featuring Mendis’s final long-form interview on the period, explores themes of migration and civil disobedience. Mendis was forcibly deported in January 1989 and continued human rights work until his death in 2024.

  • Actor Bill Nighy will launch “ill-advised by Bill Nighy” on Oct. 9, an eight-part weekly series addressing listener questions on social situations and everyday dilemmas. The podcast, produced by EYEPOD Studios and distributed by Acast, invites audiences to submit questions via Instagram voice notes and will feature book recommendations and weekly playlists. New episodes release each Thursday following the debut.
