today's brief

  • NBC announced Tuesday the launch of "The Official One Chicago Podcast," set to premiere September 18 with former Chicago police officer Brian Luce as host. The 28-episode weekly series will feature exclusive interviews with stars from the network's Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med franchises, with video versions publishing on NBC's One Chicago YouTube channel.

  • The announcement coincides with new research from Indonesia showing podcast consumption patterns among 1,100 consumers, revealing that only 21 percent accessed podcasts in the past three months compared to 77 percent for YouTube. The Populix study found that podcast listeners prefer educational content and motivational programming, with most episodes consumed during evening hours between 8-10 PM.

  • Meanwhile, industry costs are shifting dramatically as Inception Point AI, led by former Wondery COO Jeanine Wright, demonstrates AI-generated podcast production for one dollar or less per episode. The company's Quiet Please Podcast Network has produced over 5,000 shows since September 2023, generating 10 million downloads while publishing more than 3,000 episodes weekly with minimal human involvement.

  • In partnership developments, Vox Media announced it will handle sales, marketing and distribution for "Hacks on Tap," the political podcast hosted by David Axelrod, Mike Murphy and John Heilemann. The strategic partnership reflects continued consolidation in the podcast industry as established media companies seek premium political content ahead of the 2026 election cycle.
