Menopause Awareness Month Special on How Do We Manage podcast
How Do We Manage? is a podcast that explores how to navigate life, technology and the modern world with the help of expert guests. In a new episode launching on 14th October 2025, to mark Menopause Awareness Month, host Stephanie von Bismarck interviews Dr. Naomi Potter, co-author of the best-selling book Menopausing by Davina McCall, about the myths and misconceptions of menopause.
The episode starts with a short fact-finding session where Dr. Potter defines menopause and perimenopausal symptoms including hot flushes, night sweats and significant mental health challenges. She also speaks about treatment options - from Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT) to herbal remedies and lifestyle changes - that can make a real difference.
Dr. Potter, who is the founder of Menopause Care, the UK’s leading menopause clinic, shares why she decided to work in the field of menopause and that until recently, menopause and perimenopause has been unrecognised, misunderstood and dismissed.
“When I was at medical school in the late 90s, there wasn’t any training on menopause - it was just thought of as ‘aging’. Now working on treatment for menopause, it is very satisfying because I know you get transformative results.”
Speaking from personal experience, von Bismarck shares that her mother struggled with peri-menopausal symptoms but, like many women, she was dismissed. As a result, the pair emphasise the importance of education, arguing that girls should learn about menopause in school, alongside reproductive health. Praising the likes of Davina McCall and other public figures who speak openly about menopause, both are hopeful that the stigma is being challenged despite Western culture’s obsession with youth, in particular young women.
Potter also demystifies common misconceptions in a “Fact or Fiction” segment, including whether HRT causes cancer or if women can still get pregnant during peri-menopause.
Dr. Potter’s main message to listeners is: “Don’t just put up with it”. She also encourages men to learn and inform themselves about menopause in order to be better family members and partners who can support women going through a pivotal stage in their life.
The interview is available on How Do We Manage? from Tuesday, 14th October 2025. New episodes are released every Tuesday.
