Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 (MAIHT3K) is a podcast supported by the non-profit Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR). Alex Hanna and Emily M. Bender, two social scientists who focus on tech, dissect examples of overhyped claims about large language models and other so-called AI (we have some beef with how that term is used) in a fun, but also incisive manner – the motto is "ridicule as praxis". Episodes focus on the harms both of these technologies, and of the hype itself.
The setup: We record video and audio in Riverside, but podcast recordings are also streamed live on Twitch, allowing our hosts to interact live with viewers. Currently we use OBS to make this happen, as OBS allows us some extra functionality, but have occasionally used Riverside's streaming capability directly. We put episode videos on Peertube (a Fediverse alternative to YouTube), and use Buzzsprout to release the podcast.
Producer duties:
Produce and record episodes
Support remote guests and hosts in achieving optimal sound quality
Monitor Twitch chat during recording, share links to media that hosts are discussing
Lightly edit episode video and post to Peertube
Transcribe audio for both subtitles and transcript – correct machine transcription.
Lightly edit and master episode audio and release via Buzzsprout
Write episode show notes and intro/outro scripts
Support archiving of episodes as they're created
Create a 1-minute audiogram or shortform video to promote latest episode on social media
Required qualifications:
Demonstrated experience in audio production, including remote recording workflows, script writing, recording, editing, mixing, and mastering.
Proficiency in Adobe Audition or similar professional audio software.
Comfortable working independently and collaborating as part of a team.
Familiarity with podcast hosting platforms and metadata requirements.
Knowledge of best practices and emerging trends in audio production and podcasting.
Comfort with basic video editing in iMovie or similar
Familiarity with Twitch and OBS, or other live streaming workflows.
Preferred qualifications:
Knowledgeable about generative AI and the many controversies around its use, including environmental, educational, healthcare, and human rights contexts.
Excellent writing skills: we get high tech at times, but lean on conversational, fun script and show notes to help guide our audience through the material we cover.
Demonstrated familiarity with Mystery AI Hype Theater.
Pay and working conditions: This is a part-time, contract position, paid hourly at $40/hr for up to 10 hours a week. Work is fully remote. DAIR has a limited ability to support purchase of software licenses if needed to complete any of the above tasks.
