Here’s the uncomfortable part: the report concludes that podcasting is becoming increasingly hard to define as a category — and that the industry’s measurement, advertising, and distribution infrastructure hasn’t caught up.

The problem is that the industry’s advertising infrastructure, measurement standards, and distribution norms were built for neither — they were built for audio RSS, and they’re straining under the weight of what podcasting has become.

The Big Picture

For podcasters: The report is unambiguous that video is not replacing audio — it’s expanding consumption. The Edison data makes this clear: most American podcast users now do both. The strategic question isn’t “Should I do video?” It’s “Which of my formats translates to video without destroying what makes it work in audio?” Conversational formats convert easily. Highly produced narrative audio often doesn’t — and forcing it into video can gut the intimacy that made it compelling in the first place. Know which type of show you’re running before you point a camera at it.

For podcast producers: The workflow implications here are significant and underappreciated. The Times and Sunday Times head of podcasts, Dan Box, says the industry is approaching an “inflection point” where Apple’s multimodal vision — seamless audio/video toggling — may require publishers to edit video first and derive audio from it. That inverts every current production workflow. Producers who aren’t building dual-format capability now will be rebuilding under pressure later. The report also documents a pattern worth watching: publishers creating separate studio units (Guardian Studios, launched February 2026) specifically to develop creator talent and build show franchises. That’s a different skill set than traditional audio production.

For the industry: The measurement problem runs through this entire report like a fault line. • The Trade Desk reported audio grew year-over-year faster than any other channel in Q4 2025 — despite representing just 6% of their total business

Why It Matters

Programmatic audio buying doubling in four years is a structural shift, not a campaign trend. When 82% of agencies are buying audio programmatically, the manual direct-deal model that dominated podcast advertising for its first two decades is no longer the default — it’s the exception. For podcast publishers still primarily transacting through host-read direct deals and insertion-order buys, that’s a critical signal. The infrastructure buyers are using has changed. Amazon’s announced integrations with iHeart (870+ US broadcast stations plus podcasts), Global Media’s DAX in the UK, and SiriusXM/Pandora/SoundCloud through a single DSP are all pointing in the same direction: audio advertising is being absorbed into the same programmatic stack as display and video. Podcast inventory that can’t be reached through that stack is increasingly invisible to performance buyers.

The Big Picture

For podcasters: If your show’s ad inventory isn’t accessible through at least one of the three dominant DSPs — Google DV360, The Trade Desk, or Amazon — you are structurally excluded from the fastest-growing segment of audio ad buying. The question isn’t whether to engage with programmatic. It’s whether your hosting and monetisation infrastructure supports it. Check with your host or network about DAI and programmatic availability. This capability is table stakes now.

For podcast producers: The convergence of broadcast radio, streaming audio, and podcasting into unified programmatic buying environments — exemplified by Amazon’s DSP integrations — has direct implications for how you package and pitch client campaigns. Cross-channel audio buys that include podcast inventory are increasingly executable from a single platform. Producers advising on monetisation strategies need to understand which DSPs their clients’ shows can actually be accessed through — and flag the gap where it exists.

For the industry: The acceleration here — 17% growth in a single year after four years of 6% annual growth — suggests that programmatic audio hit an inflection point in 2025. Amazon’s move to bring terrestrial AM/FM radio into its DSP alongside streaming and podcasts is the most consequential near-term development. It either forces podcast inventory to compete more transparently on a level programmatic field, or it forces podcast advertising to better articulate what makes it distinctly valuable compared to commoditised audio inventory. REALLY? Yes. Really. The industry needs to decide which argument it’s making — because the DSPs aren’t going to make it for you.

Podwires Rundown: The podcast industry has been debating AI voices for years. But a new study from Sounds Profitable suggests the more important question isn’t whether listeners accept AI—it’s which audience members do and why the gap between them is wider than anyone expected.

The new Audio Primes framework splits podcast consumers into two camps: Audio Primes — those who consume at least 75% of their podcasts as audio — and Video Primes, who watch at least 75%. These aren’t demographic buckets. They’re behavioural ones. And Audio Primes, counterintuitively, skew slightly younger than the general podcasting base.

Here’s the uncomfortable part. When both groups were asked how they’d react to discovering a favorite podcast used AI-generated voices:

• 48% of Audio Primes said they’d be less likely to keep listening

• Only 15% of Audio Primes said they’d be more likely

• 40% of Video Primes said less likely — but 30% said more likely

That’s double the AI enthusiasm among Video Primes. Let that sink in.

Why It Matters

The split reveals something structural about how different audiences have been conditioned by the platforms they use. Video Primes have spent years inside TikTok and YouTube ecosystems saturated with AI avatars, synthetic narrators, and deepfake influencers. They’ve already made their peace with artificial voices. Audio Primes haven’t — and the reason is almost architectural: for audio-first listeners, the voice is the medium. There’s nothing else there. Swapping it for a synthetic version isn’t a production decision. It’s a substitution of the core product.

For anyone buying, selling, or producing podcast advertising, this framework matters immediately. An AI-narrated ad read lands very differently depending on which audience is consuming it.

The Big Picture

For podcasters: Before experimenting with AI-generated voices—for intros, ad reads, narrations, or episode productions— know your audience’s consumption mode. If your show skews audio prime, AI voice is a trust issue, not a production efficiency. If you’re building for a video-first audience, the calculus is different. Segment before you decide.

For podcast producers: The Audio Primes / Video Primes distinction should inform every AI tool evaluation you do in 2026. Producers working with audio-first talent and audio-first audiences need to treat voice authenticity as a non-negotiable. Producers building video-first or hybrid shows have more room to experiment – and may actually benefit from the novelty signal AI voice creates with that audience.

For the industry: The AI voice debate has been too binary. The real story isn’t “listeners hate AI” — it’s that a meaningful and growing segment of podcast consumers is actively open to it, and that segment correlates with video platform behaviour. As podcast consumption continues fragmenting across YouTube, Spotify, and audio-native apps, AI tools won’t land uniformly across the audience. Advertisers, networks, and platforms need measurement frameworks that account for this split – not just consumption format, but the expectations and tolerance levels that come with it.

The survey covered 10,000 respondents aged 15–69, conducted December 5–6, 2025. Otonal is a digital audio advertising company with commercial interests in growing Japan’s podcast ad market. • Japan’s overall podcast usage rate hit 18.2% in 2025, up one percentage point yearoveryear—a steady climb from 14.2% when the survey launched in 2020.

For podcast producers: The “listen while doing something else” figure—80.8% of users—tells you something critical about production priorities. Clarity, pacing, and audio quality are non-negotiable for a multitasking audience. But the video podcast adoption rate (76.2% monthly) means you can’t ignore the visual layer either. Producers working in or entering the Japanese market need a dual-format workflow. That’s not optional anymore.

For the industry: The purchase conversion data—54.8%—is the number to put in front of every brand sceptic. Japan is building an evidence base for podcast advertising effectiveness that Western markets are still trying to construct. The bigger strategic question is whether global ad platforms and measurement companies will prioritise Japan now, while the audience is young and habit-forming, or wait until the market is mature enough to demand attention. The former is the smarter play. The latter is what usually happens.

For podcasters: YouTube isn’t just a distribution play for your existing audience—it’s the most realistic bridge to non-listeners who are already there and could stumble into your content before they ever consciously decide to “try podcasting". Optimise YouTube for discoverability, not just consumption. And if your show has any relevance to Spanish-speaking audiences, the data flags a real, underserved opportunity: 48% of Hispanic and Latino holdouts are primarily Spanish-proficient, and local Spanish-language content is specifically called out as a gap worth filling.

For podcast producers: The car remains the most important unconquered territory. Webster’s data identifies commute and travel utility as a top conversion trigger—and yet the industry’s marketing rarely leads with it. Producers advising creators on growth strategy should be building car-listening into content architecture: clean audio, strong episode openers, and no visual-dependent segments that leave audio-only listeners behind.

For the industry: The strategic play here is radio. AM/FM broadcast still indexes strongly with holdouts, and streaming audio on radio is declining, which means there’s an audience actively searching for an alternative they don’t yet know exists. Targeted ad buys in small and mid-sized markets promoting podcast content through radio isn’t a retro idea. It’s the most direct line from where this audience already is to where the industry needs them to go. The correctable gap isn’t awareness. The market impact is not yet.

For podcasters: The show-level data buried in this analysis is the most actionable finding. Even among top-ten podcasts, the audio-to-video ratio varies dramatically—from a roughly even split at the top to a 59% audio majority at number ten. Understand the consumption habits of your own audience before spending money on video production for the distribution of Apple Podcasts. Apple’s improvements benefit creators whose audiences are already video-inclined on that platform. For everyone else, the ROI calculation hasn’t changed much.

For podcast producers: The multi-platform consumption reality—Apple primary users are also on YouTube daily—means production decisions need to account for audience behavior that doesn’t stay neatly inside any one platform’s ecosystem. Producing video for Apple Podcasts while ignoring YouTube optimisation is producing for the smaller audience. The two platforms are not either/or for most listeners; they’re both/and. Workflow and resource allocation should reflect that.

For the industry: The deeper story here is platform diversity versus consolidation. Signal Hill’s Hird frames Apple’s video push as a step towards supporting ecosystem diversity rather than accelerating consolidation – and that framing is worth taking seriously. A healthier podcast ecosystem has multiple viable platforms competing for listener attention. Apple retaining or growing its share is strategically valuable for the industry even if the near-term numbers are modest. The alternative—YouTube and Spotify continuing to absorb share while Apple retreats—concentrates platform power in ways the industry should not be comfortable with. Apple’s video investment, however imperfect in execution, is at least movement in the right direction.

• Adding audio podcasting to a media campaign is 33% more effective at driving brand consideration than radio alone

• Acast podcasts increase campaign reach by 25% over AM/FM radio, 21% over BVOD, 15% over live TV, 14% over music streaming, and 9% over SVOD

• 48% of those surveyed said they would consider a brand or product advertised in podcast audio, and 46% found podcast ads more entertaining in this format

• 55% of respondents said adding podcasts to a campaign adds credibility — outpacing live TV (53%), BVOD (51%), and SVOD (47%)

• Podcast video ranks first in driving attention across key visual channels, outperforming TV, BVOD, and SVOD

Why It Matters

The credibility number is the one to watch. Fifty-five percent of UK consumers associate podcast advertising with brand credibility — higher than television. Let that sink in. For decades, a TV spot was the shorthand for “this brand is serious.” That’s quietly shifting. The active listening style within podcasting means consumers are choosing podcasts as a destination — not encountering ads as background noise the way they might with TV or social scrolling. Intent changes everything. When someone opts in to hear a host, they’re also opting in to hear what that host endorses. That’s not an impression. That’s a relationship. The reach numbers are impressive on their own — but the credibility finding is the one that should be in every podcast ad sales deck sent out this week.

The Big Picture

For podcasters: This data is leverage. If you’re in conversations with brand partners who are still treating podcast as a line-item add-on to their TV or radio buys, flip the script. The incremental reach argument is now empirically documented — use it. Position your show not as supplementary reach but as the credibility anchor that makes the rest of the campaign work harder.

For podcast producers: The video finding deserves a hard look. Podcast video outperforms TV, BVOD, and SVOD in driving attention — which means the production investment in a proper video setup isn’t just a YouTube play. It’s an attention play. Clients buying video podcast integrations are getting a premium attention environment. Make sure your pricing reflects that.

For the industry: The Acast UK YouTube program with Little Dot Studios and the Spotify strategic integration for video podcasting signals where the real distribution arms race is heading — and it’s multiformat or bust. The platforms building cross-channel infrastructure right now are the ones that will own the advertiser relationship in three years. Independent publishers without platform partnerships should be watching this closely, because the credibility premium podcasting holds today doesn’t stay premium forever without a distribution strategy to match.
