Over the last three posts, I’ve been walking you through a single thesis applied to three different layers of the podcast industry. On Tuesday, I argued that podcasting has matured, but its professional layer has not, and that the gap is an infrastructure problem rather than a content problem. On Thursday, I showed how that gap plays out in hiring and how Podwires Marketplace exists to close it. On Saturday, I made the same case for tools and how Podwires Toolbox is built to give the industry a cleaner starting point for discovery.

Today, I want to close the series with the piece that ties everything together — and in many ways, the piece that makes the rest of it worth building.

Not every valuable part of an industry should be left to the algorithm.

Some of the most important things in podcasting — relationships, trust, opportunities, reputation, shared learning — grow best in spaces that feel more intentional than a public feed. The work of building a career in this field does not happen through viral moments. It happens through the slower, quieter layers of connection that form between people over time. Those layers are what turn a collection of freelancers into an actual professional community, and they are what turn isolated shows into a connected industry.

That is the thinking behind Podwires Community and the Podwires Newsletter — two pieces of the ecosystem that look different from the Marketplace and the Toolbox but do something equally important. There is a real cost to the way public platforms have shaped professional life in this industry. LinkedIn rewards broadcasts over conversations. Twitter rewards hot takes over substance. Public newsletters broadcast to everyone but rarely create the kind of back-and-forth that leads to trust. None of those platforms are bad. They all play a role. But none of them are designed for the specific thing that professional communities need to do — provide people a consistent, low-noise environment where they can exchange ideas with others who do similar work.

This discussion connects directly back to Tuesday’s argument about fragmented infrastructure. I pointed out that professional community in podcasting currently happens inside channels originally built for other purposes — Slack groups meant for internal teams, Facebook groups built for casual social use, and DMs that were never meant to scale. These spaces do real benefit but they were never designed for the specific work of sustaining a professional industry. The friction I described on Tuesday in hiring and on Saturday in tools shows up here too, just in a different form. It shows up as missed connections, lost context, and relationships that never quite compound into something durable

Think about what actually happens inside a well-functioning professional community. Someone asks a practical question about a workflow and receives three thoughtful answers from people who have solved the same problem. Someone shares a project they are working on and receives real feedback instead of performative applause. Someone mentions they are looking for a collaborator and finds one within a week because the people in the room actually know them. Someone posts about a challenging client situation and gets useful perspective from others who have navigated similar dynamics. None of these exchanges would ever have happened on a public feed. They require a different kind of space.

A successful professional community produces outcomes that platforms cannot replicate. It produces referrals. It produces collaborations. It produces mentorship. It produces honest feedback. It produces the kind of quiet, compounding trust that becomes the foundation of long-term careers. Those things do not scale on public feeds. They require more intentional spaces.

That is what Podwires Community is built to be.

The intentionality matters. Communities that try to grow too fast often lose the qualities that made them valuable in the first place. The goal is not to become the biggest podcast community on the internet. The goal is to be the most useful one for the people who work seriously. For new readers, the newsletter is usually the first entry point into what Podwires is building. It is where someone who has never heard of the company can encounter the thesis, understand the approach, and decide whether any of it resonates. For long-time subscribers, the newsletter is where the strategy deepens. Each post adds context. Each series adds clarity. Over time, subscribers end up with a much richer understanding of where the ecosystem is heading than any single product launch could ever communicate on its own.

Publishing also serves a purpose that most companies underestimate. It forces clarity. Writing a thesis down and sharing it publicly is one of the most reliable ways to sharpen thinking. A founder who publishes consistently ends up with a much clearer picture of what they are building than one who only communicates through product announcements. The act of explaining the vision, over and over again, in different ways and from different angles, is itself part of how the vision gets refined.

There is also a longer-term benefit to publishing that becomes obvious only over time. A body of writing builds trust in a way that individual posts cannot. When someone encounters a company for the first time and can read twenty pieces about what it believes, why it exists, and how it thinks about the industry, they develop a fundamentally different kind of confidence than they would from a landing page alone. Publishing is how a company earns the right to be taken seriously as a long-term presence in an industry rather than just another launch.

Together, the Community and the Newsletter do something that a product alone cannot. They create continuity. They build shared context. They connect professionals not just to tools and opportunities but also to each other — and to the broader story of where the industry is going.

This matters because industries do not get stronger through platforms alone. They get stronger through networks. Platforms provide utility. Networks provide trust, memory, and resilience. The podcast industry has no shortage of platforms trying to serve it. It has a much more serious shortage of networks built around the people actually doing the work.

The distinction between platforms and networks is worth sitting with. A platform is transactional. You show up, get what you need, and leave. A network is relational. You show up, contribute, build relationships, and become part of something that persists. Platforms optimise for immediate utility. Networks optimise for long-term value. The podcast industry has plenty of transactional infrastructure and very little relational infrastructure. Over the long run, that imbalance is a problem — because the relational layer is where reputations get built, careers get sustained, and institutional knowledge gets passed between generations of practitioners.

This is the piece that brings the full ecosystem into view. On Thursday, I described the Marketplace as the utility layer that helps professionals find work. On Saturday, I described the Toolbox as the infrastructure layer that helps them do the work better. Today, the Community and Newsletter complete the picture by adding the relational and editorial layers that help them sustain careers and stay connected to where the industry is going. Four parts. One thesis. Built for the long term.

I want to be honest about one more thing. Building a community and publishing a newsletter are not shortcuts to scale. They are long-term commitments to the people in an industry. They take years to build meaningfully. They require showing up consistently even when the metrics do not immediately justify it. The first hundred posts rarely feel like they are moving anything. The first thousand community conversations can feel quiet. But both compound. And the compounding is what produces something that nothing else can replicate — a professional layer with real depth, real trust, and real staying power.

That is the kind of ecosystem I want Podwires to become over time. Not just a suite of products, but an actual home for the people building this industry. Podwires Rundown: Tom Webster’s latest piece for Sounds Profitable – drawn from the Audio Primes 2026 report, sponsored by RSS.com and derived from The Podcast Landscape 2025 in partnership with Signal Hill Insights – introduces a segment that dismantles almost every assumption the industry has made about audio-first listeners. The research covers podcast consumers who listen to 75% or more of their podcasts as audio. They represent 22% of all podcast consumers. And nearly everything we thought we knew about them is wrong.

The Key Points

• Audio Primes skew younger, not older — the 55+ cohort under-indexes by nine points; the 35-to-54 cohort over-indexes by six

• 90% of Audio Primes use YouTube — eleven points above the total podcast audience — yet they’re using it to listen, not watch

• 41% of Audio Primes cite YouTube as their primary podcast platform, nearly identical to the total audience figure — same platform, fundamentally different behavior

• 77% listen at least weekly (18 points above average); 71% are likely to recommend a podcast to someone else (11 points above average)

• Audio Primes earn more and are more educated: 9% make over $200,000 annually (three points above average); 39% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher

Why It Matters

The industry has been measuring platform use and assuming it understood listener behaviour. It doesn’t. A significant slice of what platforms are counting as “video podcast consumption” on YouTube is, in practice, audio consumption running on video infrastructure – screen off, phone face-down, earbuds in. This is not a minor issue. That’s a structural measurement gap. Advertisers buying video podcast inventory on the assumption of visual attention are, often, buying audio reach at video CPMs. That conversation needs to happen openly, and it hasn’t.

The Big Picture

For podcasters: Audio Primes are your most loyal, most evangelical, and most commercially valuable listeners — and they’re actively auditioning new shows. 32% started a new podcast in the last month, eight points above average. They keep short rotations, which means earning a slot matters enormously. The actionable play: prioritise audio quality and substance over visual production for this segment. They found you through video clips and Reels, but they’re staying for the listening experience. Give them something worth closing their eyes for.

For podcast producers: The ad load conversation needs reframing. Audio Primes are more sensitive to irrelevant ads, not ad volume. They’ll sit through spots — they just won’t sit through the wrong ones. That’s a targeting brief, not a frequency cap argument. Productions serving this audience should be pushing advertisers towards contextual and category relevance over raw impression volume.

For the industry: The platform-equals-behaviour assumption is broken, and it’s distorting how advertisers value audio. YouTube reporting a podcast “view” tells you nothing about whether that listener watched a frame. Until measurement catches up to actual behavior—not declared platform use—every video podcast metric on the market should carry an asterisk. The industry needs to push for behavioural measurement, not just platform attribution. Webster has handed the trade a legitimate grievance to take to the measurement table. Use it.

For independent podcast producers and creator-led shows, platform fragmentation is a real cost — both in dollars and time. beehiiv is betting that consolidating hosting, distribution, analytics, website, newsletter, and monetization into one system is a strong enough value proposition to pull creators away from dedicated podcast hosts. The MCP integration is the most technically notable element here: if it works as described, it removes the CSV-export-and-spreadsheet workflow that most independent podcasters currently use to understand their audience. Asking a plain-language question and getting an answer is meaningfully faster than the current alternative.

The Big Picture

For podcasters: The zero-cut revenue model is the headline number. Luma takes 2% plus $0.99 per ticket. Patreon takes up to 12%. If beehiiv’s infrastructure is reliable, the economics of keeping revenue on-platform are straightforward. The actionable move is straightforward: if you’re already on beehiiv for your newsletter, the migration cost to consolidate your podcast hosting here is low — and the analytics upgrade via MCP may be worth it on its own.

For podcast producers: The IAB-certified analytics with real-time reporting and bot filtering address a legitimate gap in the independent hosting market. Most small-to-mid-tier hosting platforms lag 24 hours on data and don’t disclose their bot filtering methodology. Producers managing shows for clients should verify beehiiv’s IAB certification status directly before presenting its numbers to advertisers.

For the industry: The MCP integration is the more structurally interesting development. It signals that AI-native analytics interfaces are moving from enterprise platforms down to creator tools — and faster than most expected. If natural language querying of podcast data becomes table stakes at the indie tier, it will raise audience expectations of what analytics access looks like across the board. That’s pressure on every hosting platform to modernize how data is surfaced.

Why It Matters

Podcast advertising has a persistent measurement problem. Advertisers moving budget into audio — including podcasts — regularly face pushback from media planners who default to digital channels with more familiar attribution models. This study is attempting to answer that objection using econometric data from a recognised third-party dataset rather than self-reported podcast metrics. If the ROI comparisons hold under scrutiny, it gives audio sales teams a credible counterargument to the “we can measure digital better” objection that has historically suppressed audio’s share of media budgets. The uncomfortable caveat: the deepest findings come from seven brands, and the report is explicit that this sample self-selected based on audio spend commitment. That’s not a fatal flaw, but it is a limitation the industry should acknowledge rather than paper over.

The Big Picture

For podcasters: The study reinforces digital audio’s price premium relative to broadcast radio — and does so using third-party econometric data rather than platform-supplied numbers. That’s a more defensible position in an advertiser conversation. The specific finding that digital audio delivers slightly higher ROI than broadcast radio is attributed partly to targeting efficiency. For podcast publishers negotiating CPMs, this is usable evidence. The actionable move: reference the Profit Ability 2 methodology specifically, not just the Radiocentre headline numbers, when presenting to media buyers.

For podcast producers: The 70/30 broadcast-to-digital audio split recommendation — applied when audio reaches 10% or more of total media spend — matters for campaign architecture conversations. Producers working on branded content or host-read campaigns should understand where podcast inventory sits within a broader audio budget framework. Campaigns where digital audio is used to substitute rather than supplement broadcast radio appear to underperform. That has implications for how integrated audio packages should be structured.

For the industry: The most significant finding isn’t the ROI numbers — it’s that pure-play digital channels (paid social, online video, online display, PPC) are consistently outperformed by audio across both timeframes. At a moment when advertiser budgets continue to flow towards programmatic digital channels on the basis of measurability rather than proven ROI, this study is a direct challenge to that allocation logic. The industry’s job now is to pressure-test these findings publicly and push for expanded datasets that go beyond seven brands before making the results the centrepiece of audio’s value proposition.

Podcasters with existing educational or family-oriented content should be actively tracking this ranking as a benchmark, and those without a kids offering may want to reconsider the category given its audience development implications.

For podcast producers: The methodology matters here. Edison is measuring consumption through parental proxy – meaning it shows that parents and children listening together may be overindexed relative to child-only listening. Productions targeting a kids’ audience specifically should seek to understand whether their listeners are children independently or family co-listeners, as that distinction affects both content strategy and advertiser conversations.

For the industry: Edison’s expansion of the ranking to ten titles is a quiet signal that the kids’ category has reached sufficient measurement maturity to report with more granularity. The long-term strategy is to build an audience pipeline. An industry that fails to develop the podcast habit in children is entirely dependent on adult conversion — a narrower and more competitive funnel. The titles on this list are doing foundational work for the medium that the broader industry benefits from but rarely invests in directly.

Two posts into this series, the pattern should be starting to feel familiar. On Tuesday, I made the case that podcasting has matured but its professional layer has not. On Thursday, I showed how that plays out in hiring— and why Podwire,s marketplace exists to fix it. Today, I want to apply the same thesis to the other foundation every production relies on: tools.

Every podcast workflow runs on tools. That sentence sounds obvious, but the full weight of it only becomes clear once you try to map the modern podcast stack in detail.

A serious production today can touch more than a dozen different tools across the lifecycle of a single episode. Recording platforms. Editing software. Remote interview solutions. Multitrack processing tools. Noise reduction and mastering software. Hosting providers. Transcription services. AI-assisted writing and research tools. Show note generators. Distribution services. Social audio clipping tools. Newsletter platforms. Analytics dashboards. Ad insertion platforms. Guest booking tools. Publishing workflow systems. And that is before you get to the specialised tools used by larger production companies and networks.

The modern podcast stack is broader than it has ever been — and it is moving faster than most producers can reasonably track.

This pace is worth pausing on. Five years ago, a single established player dominated most of these categories, which either did not exist or were in their infancy. Today, nearly every category has multiple credible options, new entrants constantly launching, and pricing models that shift frequently. AI has introduced an entire layer of new tools across transcription, editing, research, and content repurposing. Remote recording tools have evolved dramatically since the shift to distributed production. Hosting platforms have added sophisticated analytics, dynamic ad insertion, and monetisation features that barely existed a few years ago. The landscape is not just wide. It is actively in motion.

The problem is not that there are too few tools. The problem is that discovery is still a mess.

If this scenario sounds familiar, it should. It is the same pattern I described in Thursday’s post on hiring — an industry with plenty of options but no dedicated infrastructure for navigating them. In hiring, the cost shows up in mismatched talent and wasted search time. In tools, this manifests as rushed decisions and suboptimal stacks. Different surfaces. Same underlying problem.

Here is how most podcast professionals actually find the tools they use. They stumble onto recommendations in a newsletter. They notice a colleague mentioning something in a DM. They read a scattered blog post from two years ago that may or may not still be accurate. They click through an ad that happened to show up on the right day. They search aimlessly through review sites that mix genuine analysis with sponsored content. They ask in a Slack group and get five different opinions. Eventually they pick something, commit to it, and hope for the best.

This process wastes enormous amounts of time. It also produces worse decisions. A producer who is rushing to pick a transcription tool in the middle of a project is going to make a different decision than one who can evaluate options in a structured, organised resource. A team evaluating a new hosting platform under pressure will often choose based on surface-level features rather than the subtle workflow differences that actually matter day to day. And over the course of a year, the cumulative cost of those rushed decisions adds up — in money, in workflow friction, and in opportunity cost.

There is a quieter cost, too. When discovery is chaotic, smaller and newer tools with genuinely strong offerings often lose out to larger incumbents simply because they are harder to find. Buyers default to whatever shows up first, gets advertised most aggressively, or happens to be mentioned by a trusted voice that week. Good products get invisible. Products with less quality but superior marketing budgets receive disproportionate representation. The entire buying process becomes less efficient than it should be, and the market signal that is supposed to guide product quality gets distorted. This is the same dynamic I described in the Marketplace post, just applied to products instead of people.

As podcasting matures, the surrounding infrastructure has to mature with it. Producers should not have to reinvent their research process every time they evaluate a new tool. Teams should not have to rely on institutional memory to track what works. Independent creators should not have to piece together a stack from random recommendations. They all deserve a more reliable starting point.

For freelancers, a better tool discovery layer saves real hours every month. Hours that would otherwise get lost in research get redirected into actual production work. For growing teams, it sharpens decisions about what to adopt and when. A team that can evaluate options through a structured resource makes better choices faster, which compounds into better workflows and less technical debt over time. For larger production companies, it provides a way to audit the stack and make smarter decisions about standardisation across shows.

For the wider industry, it makes the tooling landscape more legible instead of overwhelming, which in turn helps good products get discovered by the people who would actually benefit from them. This is a quieter benefit but a real one. Curation does not just help buyers. It helps the ecosystem distribute attention more fairly, which is beneficial for everyone serious about building in this space. Better distribution of attention produces a better market signal. Better market signal produces better products. Better products produce better podcasts. The entire chain benefits.

There is also a deeper reason the issue matters. Tool decisions shape workflows. Workflows shape the work. When producers have access to better infrastructure for making these decisions, the quality of podcast production rises across the board. That compounds over time. Meaningful improvements in show production result from small enhancements in tool discovery.

I also think about the toolbox as a counterweight to the hype cycle. New tools launch constantly, and the loudest ones tend to dominate conversation regardless of whether they are actually the best fit for most people. A thoughtful, curated resource provides a quieter alternative — a place where tools can be evaluated on their actual usefulness rather than how much attention they happened to capture that week. Over time, that kind of resource becomes one of the most trusted parts of an industry. It becomes the thing people check before they commit to a new tool, instead of the thing they wish they had checked after.

On Tuesday, I laid out the central thesis of this series: podcasting deserves better infrastructure, not more noise. The industry has matured, the professional layer has not, and the result is an ecosystem held back by friction that quietly compounds every day.

Today, I want to show you what that thesis looks like when applied to one specific problem — hiring.

Most freelance platforms were not built with podcasting in mind. That becomes painfully obvious the moment you try to hire for a real show.

Here is a scenario that plays out constantly across the industry. A creator wants to launch an interview-style podcast. They need a producer who can help shape the format, a booker who can reach the right guests, an editor who understands pacing in long-form conversation, and eventually a show manager who can keep the whole operation running on a publishing schedule. Every one of those roles requires different skills, different experience, and different instincts. Yet when that creator goes looking for help on a general freelance platform, all of those roles get flattened into the same few search categories — usually some combination of “audio editor", “podcast producer", and “virtual assistant".

The result is predictable. Search results feel random. Pricing looks wildly inconsistent. Profiles all start to look the same. The creator ends up spending hours filtering through mismatched candidates, hiring based on thin signals, and often paying too much or too little for the actual work required. Worst of all, they rarely walk away confident they found the right person. They walk away with whoever seemed least bad given the time they could spare.

Talented producers, on the other hand, face a similar issue in their own unique way. Generic categories bury their deep expertise. Their portfolios get compared to freelancers in completely unrelated fields. The craft of podcast production — which can include story development, scripting, guest research, booking coordination, production workflow design, publishing operations, launch strategy, and ongoing show management — gets reduced to a pricing tier and an hourly rate. A producer who has spent years developing a speciality in narrative shows ends up competing in the same feed as generalists who will take any job at any price. The market treats expertise and inexperience as interchangeable.

The economic effect of such a situation is real. When a marketplace cannot distinguish between specialists and generalists, it pushes everyone towards the middle. Clients who genuinely need the expertise of specialists miss out because they never surface. Clients lose out on specialists they would gladly pay for because they cannot locate them. Generalists end up taking jobs they are not quite right for, which leads to weaker outcomes on both sides. Over time, the whole market quietly underperforms what it could be.

Clients genuinely need a show manager who can handle end-to-end operations for a mid-sized podcast network. Instead of competing against everyone on earth, talent competes inside a context where their speciality actually matters.

Finding individuals who are familiar with the work prior to the initial meeting is crucial for clients. When you hire through a dedicated marketplace, you do not have to start from scratch to educate a freelancer on how podcasts are produced. You are starting from a shared baseline — which shortens hiring cycles, reduces miscommunication, and almost always produces better shows. The producer you hire already understands what a guest prep document looks like. The editor already knows how to handle a long-form interview with multiple remote participants. The show manager already understands the rhythm of a weekly publishing schedule. That shared baseline is enormous. It is also invisible until you have it.

As podcasting continues to become more professional, the hiring layer becomes one of the most important pieces of infrastructure the industry can build. Talent acquisition shapes the work that gets made. If that layer stays fragmented, the industry stays fragmented with it. Organising that layer leads to improved show quality, sustainable careers, and a stronger ecosystem. A dedicated marketplace is not just a product. It is a piece of civic infrastructure for an industry that has outgrown its current tools.

Trust is the other piece that matters here, and it is worth naming explicitly. A healthy marketplace requires trust on both sides. Talent needs to trust that the platform will surface them fairly to the right clients. Clients must have faith that the talent they discover has received honest representation. That trust is built over time, not announced in a launch post. It comes from how the platform handles disputes, how it presents profiles, how it verifies claims, and how it treats the people who use it. Building that trust is a long process. It is also the work that matters most.

That is the role I want Podwires Marketplace to play over time. Not just a hiring tool — a discovery layer that helps podcast talent build real careers and helps clients build better shows. Each part solves a specific problem. Together, they point towards a single thesis, and it is the thesis I want to plant firmly in your mind before the rest of the series unfolds: podcasting deserves better infrastructure, not more noise.

I want to be direct about why this matters. The podcast industry has been shaped for years by general-purpose platforms that were never designed around it. Talent discovery happens on platforms built for everything from graphic design to voiceover work. Tool research happens through scattered blog posts and social recommendations. Professional community happens inside channels originally built for something else entirely. The result is an industry that feels bigger and more mature than the infrastructure surrounding it, which creates friction for everyone involved.

Friction costs time. Friction costs opportunity. And over the long term, friction quietly holds an entire industry back.

It also has uneven costs. Established players with strong networks can route around fragmented infrastructure because they already know who to call. Newer entrants — the ones with fresh ideas, underrepresented voices, or careers still finding their shape — bear the full weight of the friction. They spend more time searching for opportunities. They pay higher prices for worse tools because they do not know which ones are trusted. They miss out on communities that could accelerate their careers because those communities are tucked inside private channels they have no easy way to find. Fragmented infrastructure does not just slow an industry down. It quietly reinforces existing gatekeepers.

When I look at podcasting today, I see an ecosystem that needs dedicated infrastructure — not more courses, not more trend reports, not more generic creator tools repackaged for audio. I see professionals who need better ways to be found, better ways to find the tools they need, better ways to connect with peers, and better ways to stay informed about what is actually happening inside the business. I see an industry capable of supporting real careers at scale, but held back by a lack of connective tissue between the people and products that make it function.

That is what Podwires is becoming.

This matters for a second reason that is easy to miss. Infrastructure is what lets industries scale sustainably. Without it, growth is fragile. Opportunities concentrate in a handful of gatekeepers. Information gaps widen. Talented people leave quietly because they never found the right entry point. With proper infrastructure, the opposite becomes possible. Discovery improves. Trust compounds. Opportunities distribute more fairly. Knowledge spreads faster. And the people doing the work get to build real careers in a field they actually love.

The comparison I keep returning to is how other creative industries eventually developed their own professional layers. Film has guilds, dedicated hiring platforms, specialised service directories, and publications built specifically for people inside the industry. Journalism has job boards, professional associations, and trade press focused on the craft itself. Design has Dribbble, Behance, a dozen specialised communities, and publications that cover the industry from the practitioner’s perspective. Podcasting, despite its scale, is still largely borrowing infrastructure from other industries instead of building its own.

That is not sustainable. And more importantly, it is not necessary. The industry is now big enough, serious enough, and mature enough to support its own professional layer. The question is simply who is going to build it, and how.

If you are new here, this series is the clearest introduction to what Podwires is becoming. If you have been subscribed for a while, think of it as a map of where the ecosystem is heading next. I am not writing these posts to announce features. I am writing them to share a thesis — one I have been refining for a long time and am now actively building towards.

• On Thursday, I’ll walk through Podwires Marketplace — the utility layer of the ecosystem and the piece that made everything else click into focus for me.

One final note before we move on. I am building Podwires as a founder who has spent years inside this industry, watching the same gaps persist while the space around them kept growing. This is not a platform bet. It is an infrastructure bet. And the difference matters. Platforms chase attention. Infrastructure supports work. Platforms optimise for metrics. Infrastructure optimises for durability. The podcast industry has plenty of the first and not nearly enough of the second.

The next decade of podcasting will not be shaped primarily by who has the biggest feed or the loudest launch. It will be shaped by whoever builds the quiet layers underneath — the systems that help professionals find each other, the resources that help them do their work better, and the networks that help them build real careers over time.

Sounds Profitable Study Finds Audio-First Listeners Twice as Resistant to AI Voices as Video Podcast Viewers

Podwires Rundown: The podcast industry has been debating AI voices for years. But a new study from Sounds Profitable suggests the more important question isn’t whether listeners accept AI—it’s which audience members do and why the gap between them is wider than anyone expected.

Sounds Profitable is a podcast industry research and media organization; the underlying data is drawn from The Podcast Landscape 2025, sponsored by American Public Media, BetterHelp, ESPN Podcasts, NPR, and SiriusXM.

The new Audio Primes framework splits podcast consumers into two camps: Audio Primes — those who consume at least 75% of their podcasts as audio — and Video Primes, who watch at least 75%. These aren’t demographic buckets. They’re behavioural ones. And Audio Primes, counterintuitively, skew slightly younger than the general podcasting base.

Here’s the uncomfortable part. When both groups were asked how they’d react to discovering a favorite podcast used AI-generated voices:

• 48% of Audio Primes said they’d be less likely to keep listening

• Only 15% of Audio Primes said they’d be more likely

• 40% of Video Primes said less likely — but 30% said more likely

That’s double the AI enthusiasm among Video Primes. Let that sink in.

Why It Matters

The split reveals something structural about how different audiences have been conditioned by the platforms they use. Video Primes have spent years inside TikTok and YouTube ecosystems saturated with AI avatars, synthetic narrators, and deepfake influencers. They’ve already made their peace with artificial voices. Audio Primes haven’t — and the reason is almost architectural: for audio-first listeners, the voice is the medium. There’s nothing else there. Swapping it for a synthetic version isn’t a production decision. It’s a substitution of the core product.

For anyone buying, selling, or producing podcast advertising, this framework matters immediately. An AI-narrated ad read lands very differently depending on which audience is consuming it.

The Big Picture

For podcasters: Before experimenting with AI-generated voices—for intros, ad reads, narrations, or episode productions— know your audience’s consumption mode. If your show skews audio prime, AI voice is a trust issue, not a production efficiency. If you’re building for a video-first audience, the calculus is different. Segment before you decide.

For podcast producers: The Audio Primes / Video Primes distinction should inform every AI tool evaluation you do in 2026. Producers working with audio-first talent and audio-first audiences need to treat voice authenticity as a non-negotiable. Producers building video-first or hybrid shows have more room to experiment – and may actually benefit from the novelty signal AI voice creates with that audience.

For the industry: The AI voice debate has been too binary. The real story isn’t “listeners hate AI” — it’s that a meaningful and growing segment of podcast consumers is actively open to it, and that segment correlates with video platform behaviour. As podcast consumption continues fragmenting across YouTube, Spotify, and audio-native apps, AI tools won’t land uniformly across the audience. Advertisers, networks, and platforms need measurement frameworks that account for this split – not just consumption format, but the expectations and tolerance levels that come with it.

Podcast M&A Is Back — and None of the Buyers Have Ever Published a Feed

Podwires Rundown: The podcast acquisition market is heating up again, but this cycle looks fundamentally different from the last one. The buyers aren’t podcast companies anymore.

Commercial context: The publication is an independent newsletter with no disclosed financial relationship to the companies discussed.

The uncomfortable part? Not one of the major acquirers in the current wave has ever published a podcast feed. OpenAI purchased TBPN, a daily tech talk show with 74,000 YouTube subscribers. The Chernin Group took a minority stake in Goalhanger—the UK company behind The Rest Is History—and separately invested $40 million in Audiochuck, the home of Crime Junkie. Fox Entertainment acquired Red Seat Ventures. MeidasTouch raised from Soros Fund Management. Vox Media has been in conversations about selling its podcast network.

The Key Points

• OpenAI paid low hundreds of millions for TBPN, a show that didn’t exist two years ago, generating approximately $5 million in ad revenue — and placed it under its chief political operative, not its content division

• Goalhanger reported 750 million full-episode views across 14 shows in 2025, with more than 250,000 paying members at roughly £60 per year — subscription revenue that precedes any IP expansion

• Monthly U.S. podcast reach has crossed 55% according to Sounds Profitable’s Podcast Landscape 2025, cited by Bryan Barletta as evidence the medium has arrived at the mainstream

• The 2019 cycle saw podcast companies buying podcast companies — Spotify acquired Gimlet for ~$230 million, SiriusXM acquired Stitcher — acquirers who understood the medium because they operated in it

• Raizes argues a show with 50,000 downloads and a community that converts is worth more in this market than one with 500,000 downloads and no mobilization proof

Why It Matters

The valuation logic has shifted from reach to conversion. In 2019, buyers were pricing content and hoping it would compound into a media business. In 2026, buyers are pricing audience infrastructure — specifically, whether a show can move its audience to a live event, a subscription product, or a new platform when asked. Goalhanger sold out the O2 Arena. Markiplier put a self-financed horror film into 3,000 theaters using his YouTube audience. These deals aren’t really about podcasting. They’re about using podcast-built audience relationships to solve problems in other businesses entirely — AI narrative control, cross-platform IP, political media distribution.

The Big Picture

For podcasters: The right question is no longer “what is my show worth?” It’s whether you’ve built something a buyer couldn’t simply replicate by hiring your talent directly. Download numbers don’t answer that. Subscriber conversion, live event attendance, and community mobility do. If your audience follows you across surfaces, you have leverage. If they don’t, the number on the spreadsheet is fragile.

For podcast producers: Two structural risks are embedded in every deal in this cycle. Editorial independence is a phrase included in every acquisition announcement, but TBPN operates under OpenAI’s political umbrella, and that promise will be tested the first time the show needs to cover an OpenAI controversy. And talent portability—every major property in this cycle is talent-driven; the 2019 cycle demonstrated that talent structures don’t hold. Producers building shows should be thinking about institutional audience infrastructure, not individual host equity.

For the industry: The medium has genuinely arrived — 55% monthly reach is a real number. But the acquisition heat is not a validation of the podcast business model as traditionally understood. These buyers are not trying to win the podcast industry. They’re extracting a specific asset—dense, convertible audience relationships— and deploying it elsewhere. This is a completely different thesis, and operators who misinterpret this M&A wave as a repetition of 2019 will be valuing their businesses based on an incorrect benchmark.

Audioboom’s Q1 2026 trading update illustrates the consequences of a podcast company rapidly scaling through video, particularly the short-term costs in yield.

Audioboom reported Q1 revenue of $22.5 million, up 30% from $17.3 million in Q1 2025. Gross profit reached $4.8 million, up 41%, with gross margin improving to 21.3% from 19.7%. Adjusted EBITDA hit $1.4 million — up 118% year-on-year — while monthly operating costs held flat at $1.1 million. The company ended the quarter with $5.5 million in cash.

The distribution headline is harder to ignore: 170 million average monthly downloads and video views, up 79% on Q1 2025’s 94.8 million. But the driver of that growth — the July 2025 acquisition of Adelicious, plus new video podcast signings — is also what pushed RPM down to $45.10 from $60.83. Video views yield less than audio downloads. Audioboom is betting that gap closes over time.

The Key Points

Why It Matters

The RPM decline is the number that deserves scrutiny. A 26% drop in revenue per thousand impressions isn’t a rounding error — it reflects a deliberate strategic trade: Audioboom expanded its distribution footprint dramatically through video and UK acquisitions, accepting lower per-unit yield in exchange for inventory scale. The company’s own filing frames this as “significant upside opportunity through medium-term value creation in video podcast monetisation.” That may be true. But it also means Audioboom is carrying a yield deficit right now, and the Spotify and Apple video partnerships are the mechanism by which they intend to close it. Whether those platforms deliver meaningful video CPM improvement — or whether video podcast monetisation continues to lag audio — is the operational question that will define Audioboom’s next 12 months.

The Showcase growth story is the cleaner signal here. 63% year-on-year revenue growth from a tech-based, higher-margin ad marketplace suggests the platform business is working. If Audioboom can bring video inventory yield closer to audio yield through Showcase, the 79% distribution growth starts looking like genuine leverage rather than dilution.

The Big Picture

For podcasters: Audioboom’s Crooked Media and RedHanded signings confirm the company is competing aggressively for tier-one content in both political and true crime — two of podcasting’s most commercially durable genres. If you’re a show in those categories evaluating network options, Audioboom is signalling serious investment in UK and US premium content.

For podcast producers: The RPM gap between audio and video is a real number with real consequences for creator revenue. Audioboom’s 170 million distribution figure sounds impressive — but if video views are yielding significantly less than audio downloads, producers need to understand what unit their revenue deal is denominated in. Not all impressions are equal on Audioboom’s current inventory mix.

For the industry: The Spotify and Apple video monetisation partnerships are the most strategically significant detail in this filing, and they’ve received almost no attention. Audioboom is positioning itself as the infrastructure layer between premium podcast creators and the two dominant platforms for video podcast discovery. If that positioning holds, it’s a meaningful structural advantage in the emerging video podcast ad market — not just for Audioboom, but as a proof-of-concept for how independent podcast networks navigate platform dependency.

The data says, ‘Pump the brakes.’ Signal Hill Insights has analysed the demographics of Apple Podcasts users, their usage patterns, and the necessary changes for Apple’s video campaign to significantly impact the market. The answer is a three-step climb that gets steeper at every rung. Apple isn’t wrong to invest here. But the gap between the announcement and the impact is wider than the press release suggests.

Apple’s HLS announcement is a genuine technical improvement for the subset of users watching video through Apple Podcasts. The problem is that subset is small, audio-skewed, and already spending most of their video time on YouTube. For Apple’s video push to drive meaningful market impact—not just better experience for existing users—it needs to simultaneously convert its current audio-first user base to video behaviour, reverse its platform share decline, and retain those video converts against the gravitational pull of YouTube. Each of those is a significant lift on its own. Accomplishing all three simultaneously, without a visible marketing investment or content exclusivity play, is a challenging task. The feature is real. The market impact is not yet.

For podcasters: The show-level data buried in this analysis is the most actionable finding. Even among top-ten podcasts, the audio-to-video ratio varies dramatically—from a roughly even split at the top to a 59% audio majority at number ten. Understand the consumption habits of your own audience before spending money on video production for the distribution of Apple Podcasts. Apple’s improvements benefit creators whose audiences are already video-inclined on that platform. For everyone else, the ROI calculation hasn’t changed much.

For podcast producers: The multi-platform consumption reality—Apple primary users are also on YouTube daily—means production decisions need to account for audience behavior that doesn’t stay neatly inside any one platform’s ecosystem. Producing video for Apple Podcasts while ignoring YouTube optimisation is producing for the smaller audience. The two platforms are not either/or for most listeners; they’re both/and. Workflow and resource allocation should reflect that.

For the industry: The deeper story here is platform diversity versus consolidation. Signal Hill’s Hird frames Apple’s video push as a step towards supporting ecosystem diversity rather than accelerating consolidation – and that framing is worth taking seriously. A healthier podcast ecosystem has multiple viable platforms competing for listener attention. Apple retaining or growing its share is strategically valuable for the industry even if the near-term numbers are modest. Why It Matters

The problem is that subset is small, audio-skewed, and already spending most of their video time on YouTube. For Apple’s video push to drive meaningful market impact—not just better experience for existing users—it needs to simultaneously convert its current audio-first user base to video behaviour, reverse its platform share decline, and retain those video converts against the gravitational pull of YouTube. Each of those is a significant lift on its own. Accomplishing all three simultaneously, without a visible marketing investment or content exclusivity play, is a challenging task. The feature is real. The market impact is not yet.

The Big Picture

For podcasters: The show-level data buried in this analysis is the most actionable finding. Even among top-ten podcasts, the audio-to-video ratio varies dramatically—from a roughly even split at the top to a 59% audio majority at number ten. Understand the consumption habits of your own audience before spending money on video production for the distribution of Apple Podcasts. Apple’s improvements benefit creators whose audiences are already video-inclined on that platform. For everyone else, the ROI calculation hasn’t changed much.

For podcast producers: The multi-platform consumption reality—Apple primary users are also on YouTube daily—means production decisions need to account for audience behavior that doesn’t stay neatly inside any one platform’s ecosystem. Producing video for Apple Podcasts while ignoring YouTube optimisation is producing for the smaller audience. The two platforms are not either/or for most listeners; they’re both/and. Workflow and resource allocation should reflect that.

For the industry: The deeper story here is platform diversity versus consolidation. Signal Hill’s Hird frames Apple’s video push as a step towards supporting ecosystem diversity rather than accelerating consolidation – and that framing is worth taking seriously. A healthier podcast ecosystem has multiple viable platforms competing for listener attention. Apple retaining or growing its share is strategically valuable for the industry even if the near-term numbers are modest. The alternative—YouTube and Spotify continuing to absorb share while Apple retreats—concentrates platform power in ways the industry should not be comfortable with. Apple’s video investment, however imperfect in execution, is at least movement in the right direction.

Why It Matters

The credibility number is the one to watch. Fifty-five percent of UK consumers associate podcast advertising with brand credibility — higher than television. Let that sink in. For decades, a TV spot was the shorthand for “this brand is serious.” That’s quietly shifting. The active listening style within podcasting means consumers are choosing podcasts as a destination — not encountering ads as background noise the way they might with TV or social scrolling. Intent changes everything. When someone opts in to hear a host, they’re also opting in to hear what that host endorses. That’s not an impression. That’s a relationship. The reach numbers are impressive on their own — but the credibility finding is the one that should be in every podcast ad sales deck sent out this week.

The Big Picture

For podcasters: This data is leverage. If you’re in conversations with brand partners who are still treating podcast as a line-item add-on to their TV or radio buys, flip the script. The incremental reach argument is now empirically documented — use it. Position your show not as supplementary reach but as the credibility anchor that makes the rest of the campaign work harder.

For podcast producers: The video finding deserves a hard look. Podcast video outperforms TV, BVOD, and SVOD in driving attention — which means the production investment in a proper video setup isn’t just a YouTube play. It’s an attention play. Clients buying video podcast integrations are getting a premium attention environment. Make sure your pricing reflects that.

For the industry: The Acast UK YouTube program with Little Dot Studios and the Spotify strategic integration for video podcasting signals where the real distribution arms race is heading — and it’s multiformat or bust. The platforms building cross-channel infrastructure right now are the ones that will own the advertiser relationship in three years. Podcast publishers should resist complacency in the face of a narrow overall lead and instead treat the demographic breakdown as a mandate: the window to lock in habitual listeners before they’re contested is right now.

Podwires Rundown : Fifty-eight percent. That’s the new monthly podcast consumption number. An all-time high. One hundred and sixty-seven million Americans. The industry is celebrating, and fair play — these are genuinely impressive numbers.

But here’s the uncomfortable part. Read deeper into the same report, and you’ll find the real story buried four slides past the applause. YouTube now commands 32% of daily podcast consumption time. Among weekly podcast consumers, 39% say YouTube is the service they use most often for podcasts. Spotify is at 20%. Apple Podcasts — the platform that literally invented the modern podcast ecosystem — is at 11%. Let that sink in.

Podcasting’s biggest distribution channel is a video platform that doesn’t call itself a podcast platform. And that gap is only getting wider.

Meanwhile, Apple Podcasts — still the bedrock of open RSS podcasting — is being used most often by just one in nine weekly podcast listeners. For podcasters: The dual-format reality is now confirmed at scale. 57% of your potential audience has engaged with both audio and video podcasting. That’s not a future trend — it’s the current audience. If you’re audio-only and not on YouTube, you’re invisible to the platform commanding a third of all podcast listening time. You don’t have to build a production studio. But you do need a presence. Start there.

For podcast producers: The AI user data deserves your full attention. People who use generative AI tools consume podcasts at nearly twice the rate of those who don’t. These are educated, digitally engaged, high-income skewing consumers — exactly the audience your advertising clients most want to reach. Build that case into your next media plan pitch. The data is right there.
